Shows in the UK are held under the rules of the Kennel Club or Dogshows Ltd which grade the shows according to certain rules. The grading for the KC shows is shown below.

Exemption Shows
These shows are licensed by the kennel club therefore pedigree dogs can compete however classes such as "Dog with the waggiest tail" and "Best six legs in the ring" are often held. The event is usually associated with a charity and entries are taken on the day.

Limit Shows
Are limited to the members of the society but must be entered in advance

Open Shows
Are open to all competitors whether members or not, or if the dog is a Champion or not. Good quality competition at minimal costs (less than £10 including car park, catalogue, entry and classes). These shows are entered in advance.

Championship Shows
These are the shows at which your dog can achieve the title of champion and are also the qualification shows for Crufts ( it should be noted that Crufts is only another championship show). They can be expensive to attend, until you have experience in showing don't waste your money. These shows are entered in advance.

How to enter
The shows are held throughout the year with a show usually held every weekend within 35 miles radius of each other. To find out what shows are in your area you can contact your local training club, ask the kennel club or the more usual route is to subscribe to one of the dog papers such as "Our Dogs" or "Dog World" where the shows are advertised. When you attend your first show go as a visitor (leave the dog at home it will not be allowed in) and look for the schedule table where future shows are advertised.
To enter contact the secretary and ask for the schedule. All the information required is in the schedule and on your dogs kennel club registration form (not the pedigree)
Get a library book and find out what is required in the show ring. (Try "Take them round" by Tom Horner).
Go as a visitor and ask questions.
Understand what is happening before becoming part of it.
If you must win at all costs then don't get involved.
This Site lists UK Shows!

Enjoy the experience and take home the same fabulous dog that you brought with you.
It's not the dogs fault that you can't show and the judge is an idiot!
